The name has always been said to be in honor of the Earl of Clarendon, but historians have a difficult time agreeing which of several Benning Wentworth may have had in mind. He may actually have been thinking of the town of Clarendon, Wiltshire, which in 1164 was the scene of a council of barons and bishops which issued the Consitution of Clarendon, severely limiting the rights of the clergy.
The village of Clarendon Springs once boasted that over 2,500 people came to “take the waters” every summer.

Utilities
Notes about utilities:
- One electric or phone company indicates that company serves the entire town. More than one of either indicates each serves different areas of town.
- A listed cable company MIGHT mean the entire town is covered, but not necessarily. More than one listed indicates each serves different areas of town.
- Unless your area is one served by Vermont’s only gas utility, your only option is bottled gas (any dealer).
