Sandgate was granted the same day as Manchester, and many of the same surnames appear in both grants.
Residents have always said that their town is named for the English town of the same name. Sandgate, Kent is on the English Channel, and the name there means “the gate to a sandy shore.” The English town is noted only for the ruins of a castle built for Henry VIII, but possibly the men who got the grant for the town in Vermont had connections with the older community. The name has been used in only one other place, a resort community on Brisbane Bay, Australia.
Like many of the towns in Bennington County, Sandgate was settled quite early, and by the beginning of the 19th Century the population had passed the 1,000 mark. Twenty years later, a long decline started, reflected in almost every census since.
