Complete rankings are here. The papers of Surveyors General James Whitelaw and Ira Allen show that, prior to its actual granting, the town was referred to as Number 7. The commonly accepted explanation for the current name is that it was coined by the Legislature, combining VER(mont) and (New Hamp)SHIRE. The name was changed to Ely in 1878 (see The Ely War), and back to Vershire in 1882 (not to be confused with the village of Ely in Fairlee.
