Settled near the confluence of the scenic West River and Ball Mountain Brook, Jamaica has maintained the charm and character of Vermont. Hiking trails and back roads intersect the village center, where a leisurely pace and casual atmosphere beckon visitors to slow down and enjoy the day. The natural beauty of the rivers and mountains, recreation and a glimpse of life is offered. And, after all, isn’t this really why you come to Vermont?
No, there is no Caribbean connection. Jamaica is one of only two civic entities in Vermont whose modern name is derived from a Native place name, in this case the Natick word for “beaver” (see also Winooski).
The list of men to whom Jamaica was chartered reads like a Who’s Who of Vermont’s Founding Fathers, most prominent being Thomas Chittenden, our first Governor, not just for being first on the list, but also for having signed the grant himself. Apparently, the concept of government officials not deriving personal benefit from their official actions had not developed yet.
