It has always been presumed that Sudbury was named for the English town in West Suffolk, or the Massachusetts town. It is entirely possible, however, that Benning Wentworth had one of his own kinsmen in mind. Wentworth had already used all of Augustus Henry Fitzroy’s other titles in New Hampshire (Duke of Grafton) or Vermont (Earl of Arlington, Viscount Thetford), so why not (Baron) Sudbury?
Some old maps show a Hyde Manor, often mistaken for a place-name, but rather a hotel opened in 1801 by Pitt W. Hyde, fifth son of Jedediah Hyde, a prominent early settler for whom Hyde Park is named. Eventually the hotel passed to Arunah Hyde, a grandson for whom Hydeville in neighboring Castleton is named. By 1880 the hotel was five stories high and could accomodate two hundred guests. The building can still be seen on the east side of Route 30 about two miles south of Sudbury village.
