Russian Flag & Czar Alexander III Card M27 New York Recorder Newspaper Tzar 1890:
$47.50
This card wasissued by the NEW YORK RECORDER newspaper, as a souvenir supplement given awaywith the Sunday edition of the paper. Theseries is entitled “Ruler and Flag ” and is listedas series M27 Type 5 Burdicks AmericanCard Catalogue (listed in the Periodical Issues section of the ACC). Ihave not been able to find a date of issue in any guide that I am aware of butmost of the leaders I have seen from this series where in power from the late1880’s to the mid 1890’s, so I speculate this was issued in the 1890’s. I am unsure how many are in the set but Ihave seen 18 different over the years. Thefronts also feature a serial number. Iam unsure what that number represents, but again different numbers have beenprinted on all of the others I have seen over the years as well. As the title indicates the card features a strikingillustration of Czar Alexander III and the Imperial Flag. Here is some information I found about theTsar on the internet: Alexander III, or Alexander Alexandrovich Romanov (Russian:Алекса́ндр Алекса́ндрович Рома́нов) (10 March 1845 – 1 November 1894) wasEmperor of Russia, King of Poland and Grand Prince of Finland from 13 March [O.S. 1 March] 1881 until his death on 20October [O.S. 8 October] 1894. He was highly conservative and reversed some ofthe liberal measures of his father, Alexander II. During Alexander\'s reignRussia fought no major wars, for which he was styled \"The Peacemaker\"(Russian: \"Миротворец\").
Thelithography is exceptional and rivals that of any of the Tobacco Card setsissued around the same time period. The backs were issued blank. TheCard measures 8 1/2 inches by 6 inches approximately. The card does have a fewof small edge or corner creases and some areas of discoloration to the back. It is however free from major creases andstrong color. I think this rare card displays well and wouldmake a great addition to any advanced “type” card collection, or would lookgreat matted and framed for those of Russian Heritage I havescanned the front and back of thecard fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself
