A confusing one as it's labeled both "Louis Hutchin Blair" and "Ann Hutchins Cheney."
This is a tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype; a photograph printed on a thin piece of metal that had been coated with lacquer or enamel. They were most popular during the 1860s and 1870s, but are still made today.
Image comes from the collection of Jacob Smith, Dassel, Minnesota. He appears to have been an employee of Great Northern Railway. I found a receipt with his name from New York Photo Copying House in 1887. The collection was very likely continued by a family member after he passed away. I have no further information.
This is known as a 1/9 plate tintype, since it measures about 1.75 x 3 inches. Paper measures about 2.5 x 4 inches.
