Condition is Very Good. A brief inscription to the previous owner is handwritten on the first frontispiece, otherwise there is no writing or marks throughout. A hardback with red boards and gold gilt lettering on cover & spine, gilt remains strong & solid, only very slight shelf wear, binding remains tight & secure… overall an excellent book. 151 pages. Published by Confederate Publishing, University of Alabama, 1979.
Also included with the book is The Montgomery Advertiser’s 1975 obituary of Dr. Williams, a note from his wife, Claudine, a family photo and 3 copies of a 2-page typed William’s family genealogy/history written by the author.
This History of Montgomery was first published as weekly installments in the Montgomery Examiner newspaper in the late 1940’s & early 1950’s. The original title of Dr. Williams transcript was “A History of Montgomery tp 1846” but was change to its current title by the editors. Up until the publishing of this book, this important contribution to Alabama history was never available in book form.
Contents include: Early Environs, The Agrarian Setting, the Founding of Montgomery, Socio-Economic interests: 1819-1829, Politics 1830-1832, Socio-Economic Growth 1830-1846, Politics 1830-1832, Indian Affairs & Politics 1832-1846 and Politics 1842-1846. Also included is a detailed index. This is truly a Rare & Scarce book that covers in detail, a significant era of history for the Montgomery area. A book that will fill-in some gaps in the general historical overviews available and should be included in the serious Montgomery historian’s collection! A one-of-a-kind.
