Early Rockingham-Glazed Yellow Ware Hunt Pitcher - 8 1/2" - c.1845-1858 For Sale
Early Rockingham-Glazed Yellow Ware Hunt Pitcher - 8 1/2" - c.1845-1858:
Early version of the Stag Hunt Pitcher. High probability this is from the Bennington Works and was produced sometime between 1845 and 1858. A nearly identical pitcher can be seen online at the Bennington Museum website. Insert A510 into the search bar to access.
The key to this pitcher is its fine detailing and the light application and clarity of the glaze, allowing it to drip over the molded decoration highlighting the relief design and allowing the yellow ware base to be exposed. It was produced as a two-part mold and then slipped. The branch handle was then applied. There is no hollow hole in the bowl interior. If there had been it would be indicative of a much newer piece. The pitcher measures 8 1/2" tall at the handle and weighs 3 pounds 14 ounces. It is decorated with a hunting scene showing three hounds chasing a buck in a forest setting on one side and two mounted horsemen on the other. The handle is in the form of a branch. There is a floral motif surrounding the rim at the top of the bowl.DB9298
