Cabinet card cyanotype photograph (boudoir size, 5 ¼”by 8 ½”) of a crowd of men and boys around an electric streetcar in Norwich,Connecticut, by John E. Sherman of Norwich, circa 1890s. The untitledview shows about twenty boys and men posing for their likeness around a smallopen electric streetcar or trolley. At least a few of the men by the front ofthe car look like workers, including the man holding the S shaped wrench.Another man at the middle of the trolley wears a coat with brass buttons and islikely a conductor. The little kids just had to get into the picture. The heavycoats and leafless trees show the season to be late fall or winter—an odd timefor an open streetcar to be out in operation. There’s a box inside the front ofthe trolley, upside down, with advertising for Malt Extract on it. Thephotograph is in only fair to good condition with light to moderate wear andsoiling. Note the rubbing at the corners of the mount and the tack hole atcenter bottom. The cyanotype photograph has some surface damage (the whiteareas) that is either from wear or possibly silverfish. The photograph itselfexhibits good tonal range and shows good detail. A nice early Norwich CTtrolley image!
