Antique British Staffordshire/Sunderland Lustreware Bowl Mariners Arms c.1860s
Description: This beautiful bowl was produced in the first half of the 1800s - around the 1860s - 1870s most likely in the region of Sunderland, England.
Sunderland Lustreware is a type of pottery originating from Sunderland, England. Several potteries were located along the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland in the Nineteenth Century. Though many made everyday tableware, some of them made a distinct type which became known as Sunderland Lustreware.
Indeed, similar pottery made in Tyneside (Newcastle upon Tyne and North Shields) and in Staffordshire also received this designation in later years. It is normally found in a pink form, but orange and other colors are also found. Typical pieces are religious plaques, and jugs featuring a transfer-printed image of a ship, celebrity, or building, or a painted personal inscription (known as presentation pieces).
The bowl/plaque depicts two sailors holding British flags and leaning on a Coat-of-Arms with a ship and an anchor. The inscription reads "Mariners Arms". Most likely it was a presentation piece for a sailor.
The incised mark on the back is illegible, so it is hard to say exactly if this is a Sunderland lusterware or it was made in one of the Staffordshire factories. The Sunderland lustreware was mostly pink, and Staffordshire made pink lustreware as well. The orange lustreware was much rarer but not unusual. In any case, I guarantee my dating add or take 10 years.
The bowl is in excellent flawless condition with some minor factory impures and very minor wear. It is 8.5" in diameter and 2.5" deep.
