Good morning all. Here is a very vintage Holmes Jan. 1, 1856 patent No. 3 cast iron convex shave. I always understood this design of tool to be a cobbler\'s heel shave. However going to DATAMP to look at the original patent (last 4 pictures), it was styled back in 1856 (actually 1855 when the patent was applied for) simply as a spokeshave. The cast iron body and the inset brass medallion are in excellent condition. The blade is in much better condition than it appears from the enlarged pictures. The blade is sharp now, and maybe at most just needs a careful honing. No nicks or chips. I think full depth or very close to full depth. There is some pitting well back from the edge (7th picture), but it will never become relevant.
I have never tried this on wood, and I expect that it would be difficult to use, as the mouth opening is small and the tool seems liable to easily jam with shavings. Think of this as a great artifact, and use a more modern tool for concave shaping.
