This very rare and similar to \"Lowland\" (green dominant) pattern ERDL 100% cotton twill, combat utility overalls are US special contract or in country made, and has no contract date or manufacturer as the tag has been removed/worn out (photo 6). The quality fo these overall\'s construction and materials suggests to me that is US made by a private contractor.
The roots of the camouflage pattern on this M-65 ERDL camouflage combat coat evolved from the multiple camouflage designs dating back to early WWII when the US Marines (\"frog skin\") and the US Army were experimenting with combat uniform camouflage designs that could be used in jungle, desert regions or on islands that were primarily sand. The Army came up with light weight cotton khaki uniforms early on during WWII as well as a number of camouflage designs including modified Mitchell and ERDL by the late 1940s. The ERDL pattern, aka the \"leaf\" pattern was developed by the US Army at its Engineer Research & Development Laboratories (hence the acronym ERDL) in 1948. The pattern consists of an interlocking pattern of four colors.
All these designs were basically shelved until the Vietnam War, although frogskin helmet covers were worn in Korea and the Mitchell helmet covers (and tents) were used prior to Vietnam. Mitchell and two ERDL designs surfaced during the Vietnam War when there was no basic camouflage uniform for forested or jungle environments, other than OG-107 Tropical. Special forces and other elite units were buying hunting camouflage outfits off the retail shelf at K-Mart....!!
The first issued \"modern\" ERDL design was the so-called \"Lowland\" pattern which was a green dominant scheme featuring a lime green colorway commencing around 1966. The slightly later \"Highland\" pattern featured a tan colorway in place of the green and was more brown dominant.
Not much thought was given to desert uniforms at that time!
Beginning in late 1981, the M81 Woodland (forest), which is/was another modified ERDL pattern, and 6 Color \"Chocolate Chip\" camouflage (desert) design began to replace the Vietnam War era ERDL in field units and by the end of 1982. These newer uniform types were becoming standard issue along with the OG 107 utility uniform.
This ERDL combat worn Utility Overall set is sized about like a 40 Short, maybe slightly larger.. ..CHECK the dimensions though..... If this had been an extra large I would have kept it...!!!!
Note: This rare ERDL combat utility overall is in Good+ (for having been in jungle combat), and would be very difficult, if not impossible to upgrade, unless you find new old stock.... There is are two cracks in the bill (see photos) This has been worn in the field, obviously, with no insignia ghosts (photo 6). There are a number of rips, tears, frays and repairs. (on the butt - last 3 photos and a couple of un-repaired frays on the one sleeve.) that I could find.. Pretty good for a rarest of rare ERDL overalls that have actually been in the field. These came straight out of a military trunk along with the helmet I am offering in another listing.
The lining is made of 100% cotton twill, a fabric that generally was very serviceable. The lining is near perfect! The brass military-grade double zipper is unmarked as to maker, is USA marked needs some wax, but is otherwise functional and very much intact! All buttons and snaps are present and functional. (photo 10). This See photos 3 and 6 for a close up of the shell fabric weave. I can send you a picture of any view or angle, just contact me well before the last day of the sale!
Some moke told me a while back that if an ERDL uniform had a 1969 date on it that the uniform couldn\'t have been worn over there... My father spent his final tour in Vietnam first at (Phan Rang AB (B-57B Canberra pilot), then at Ban Me Thuot AB and other smaller dirt strips around II Corps near the Cambodian border as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) flying the O-1 E/F Bird Dog) from June 1969 until June of 1970. His \"Lowland\" ERDL stuff is ALL dated 1969... so much for that \"date\" fairy tale (and there are So-o-o many others...who writes these books - do they do any actual research??)... and one other myth to dispel now, very seldom did the manufacturer of the combat coat and trousers match, camouflage or otherwise......
This unmarked ERDL \"Lowland\" pattern combat utility set is not a reproduction, was most likely made in the USAandis absolutely original to the period.
