SAMUEL CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN)
His dual signature as Clemens and Twain, on his original handwritten letter thanking poet Edward Lummis, who had written to praise Twain's books. Accompanied by a copy of Lummis' poem addressed to Twain, and by a Typed Letter Signed from Mark Twain scholar Robert Hirst, discussing both letters
Autograph Letter Signed: "S.L. Clemens/Mark Twain", 1 page, 5½x8¾. Hartford, 1886 May 17. To Mr. Edward W. Lummis. In full: "If I too were a poet, I would acknowledge your pleasant compliments in verse; but I am not, & so am forced to say my thanks in the ruder form of prose -- which is like answering the gracious salutation of a bugle with a fog-horn." Creased, shaded, folds, lightly soiled. All touches writing and signature. Accompanied by Typed Letter Signed: "Robert H. Hirst" as General Editor, Mark Twain Project, 1p, 8½x11. University of California, Berkeley, 1983 September 28. In part: "Lummis had written to Mark Twain from Worcester College, Oxford University, England, on 6 May 1886. His communication took the form of a three-page poem in which he told how he had been counseled to relieve his 'parched heart' and 'weary brain' by trying Mark Twain and then found ease for a variety of problems in the pages of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and others of his books. Lummis therefore proclaimed Mark Twain a sort of universal panacea and concluded with an amusing request for a free copy of his next book or, at least, an autograph. (Since synopsis cannot do justice to Lummis's tongue-in-cheek verses, I enclose a copy of the original, including Lummis's' (sic) calling card, from the archives of the Mark Twain Papers.) Although appreciative of Mark Twain's writings and possessing a flair for humor himself, Lummis later produced works of a very different character, writing several books on religious subjects...Sometimes impatient with autograph hunters, Mark Twain nevertheless had a sincere fondness for younger readers and took special pains to reply to them, particularly to those from foreign shores. Staple holes at upper left corner, ink note (unknown hand) at upper right margin. Fine condition. With photocopy of the letter, envelope and calling card from Lummis. Five items.
