Special 1876 World\'s Fair Map

This was a special map of Philadelphia made in 1876, the year in which that city hosted the Centennial International Exhibition. This hand-colored map, published by a cartographer located in Philadelphia, was created with visitors to the World\'s Fair in mind. It would help tourists to find their way around the city and to visit that year\'s World\'s Fair, an event honoring the 100th anniversary of the United States and, quite fittingly, held in the city regarded as the \"birthplace of the nation.\"Background: The 1876 Centennial Exposition - its official title was \"The 1876 International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine\" - was the first World\'s Fair ever held in the United States and 37 countries participated. This World\'s Fair brought nearly 10 million visitors to Philadelphia\'s Fairmount Park to view what were then regarded as the technological wonders of the world, introducing attendees to a wide variety of new inventions - including Alexander Graham Bell\'s telephone, the first Remington typewriter, a 5-foot-by-8-foot mechanical calculator that was cranked by hand, and a steam-driven monorail that transported fairgoers between the Horticultural Hall and the Agricultural Hall (the route of which is clearly detailed on this map). This is a special hand-colored map of Philadelphia made for visitors to the Centennial International Exhibition and published in that city in 1876. This map shows and identifies the routes of steam railroads, horse railroads, and ferry lines, along with information about to how to access these various means of transportation. The buildings and grounds of the World\'s Fair are shown clearly on this map, situated in Fairmont Park next to the railroad depot, with the main buildings identified. And the entire city of Philadelphia is laid out in great detail on this map. In addition to showing and naming hundreds of the city\'s streets, this historic map also identifies many points of interest in Philadelphia, including its parks, cemeteries, reservoirs and important buildings. Among these are Philadelphia\'s City Hall, the State House, a Masonic temple, Girard College, Foster House, two different prisons, the islands in the Delaware River and the numerous docks along its banks, Jefferson Square, Washington Square, Norris Square, Franklin Square, and the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane. As well as, of course, the location of the cartography firm that produced this map, O.W. Gray & Son. (There is also a small company symbol in the lower right corner of the map.)This was clearly a map made with tourists in mind. The location of the various depots for seven different railroads are identified in a box at the top of the map, and at the bottom of the map an \"Explanation\" box contains a key as to how to identify the routes of the railroads and trams that serve the city, as well an explanation of the layout of streets in Philadelphia. And for the sake of foreign tourists visiting the World\'s Fair, this is provided in three different languages.
This is a very historic map of Philadelphia and the grounds of the country\'s first World\'s Fair, held in that city in 1876, the year that this map was published by a Philadelphia cartographer.
Size: This historic map measures 26-1/2 inches wide by 17-1/4 inches high, including margins.
Condition: This map is in very good overall condition and has an excellent appearance. The details are sharp and the hand-coloring quite nice. It has only one imperfection, which is that it originally had a very small hole, the size of a pencil eraser, at the bottom of the map - but this was archivally repaired some time ago and is now virtually unnoticeable, and this in no way affects the great appearance of this historic map.
This is an original antique map - it was made 132 years ago and is not a reprint or reproduction of any kind!
