ON THE MAKALOA MAT was Jack London’s final book, a collection of short stories of the Hawaiian Islands which was begun during his visit of 1916 and was completed upon his return home to Glen Ellen, California.
The following are those stories in order, plus the dates of their completion:
On the Makaloa Mat Waikiki, Hawaii, June 6, 1916
The Bones of Kahekili Waikiki, Honolulu, June 28, 1916
When Alice Told Her Soul Glen Ellen, California, August 30, 1916
Shin Bones Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, July 16, 1916
The Water Baby Glen Ellen, October 2, 1916
The Tears of Ah Kim Waikiki, Honolulu, June 16, 1916
The Kanaka Surf Glen Ellen, California, August 17, 1916
As always, Mr. London demonstrates an uncanny ability to assimilate the culture and habits of an area/people and to be able to reproduce a fictitious but authentically correct historical work within the framework of that background. Completed about three months prior to his passing, the publication was delayed until 1919 due to the resolution of estate issues. Jack London (1876 - November 22, 1916.) Perhaps overshadowed by the author’s untimely passing, ON THE MAKALOA MAT was never issued in the large numbers associated with so many of the other London books, particularly the Hawaii editions. Only 4,972 of these First Macmillan Editions went to print. Remembered particularly for his story, The Tears of Ah Kim, ON THE MAKALOA MAT is a must have for any Hawaiian or Jack London collection. We invite you to visit our Shop for more Island Favorites.
