--ORIGINAL 1910-1912 NAVY SHARPSHOOTER BADGE, W/ CLAMSHELL CATCH.
THE HAYES BROS. CO.
The Navy Sharpshooter Badge was introduced in approximately 1904 to promote proficiency in both Pistol & Rifle marksmanship among officers & enlisted men of the Navy & Marine Corps.
The basic badge consisted of a top bar with the word Sharpshooter I raised Relief. A Requalification bar with three bronze oval slugs and the pendant. When the badge was awarded, the recipients name was engraved in 2 lines with the recipients name on line 1 and USN or USMC on the second line. If the recipient was an officer in the second line had the recipients rank predators proceeding the US and or USMC.
Upon qualification one of the bronze oval slugs was removed from the requalification bar and a silver date oval bearing the year of qualification was inserted. If the recipient qualified as an expert a bar was added to the badge with the word expert and raise letters in the year of the requalification engraved on the front of the bar. The reverse of the expert bar was a engraved with the recipients name. Bars also existed for the expert pistol shot.
It is believed that the marksman badge was discontinued about 1914 as that is the latest date observed on any requalification bar or expert bar.
