Navajo weaver Wilbertson Begaye wovethis replica Classic Period serape. All of the single-ply weft yarnis Churro Navajo sheep wool. The darkand medium indigoblue, & aniline lightgreen, red,teal and yelloware hand-dyed. White is natural, not dyed.
The curving swoop of the centralindigo diamond and edgehalf-diamonds are outlined with swooping stepped redand white meanders on a wide redband. Light greenand indigo bars withyellow chevrons arebetween the diamonds. Both ends have partial stepped indigoand red diamonds outlinedwith red and white, withwhite dashes.
Transverse zig-zag stepped tealand yellow meanders crossthe rug on very dark indigobands. Two wide red bandscontain yellow steppedcrosses with red centers.Light greenand yellow bars fill thespaces between the crosses. Eight indigoand white chevron stripes separate the wide bands.
The end cords are 2 x 3-ply, redwarp selvage cords, providing extra strength and durability comparedwith the normal 2-ply cords. The weft selvages along each edge are 3x 3-ply, teal cords. Threeweft selvage cords protect the weft loops at the edges from abrasion.These cords are knotted at the corners into tassels. The warp is mill-spun, 2-ply, whitewool. The woven density is 7 warps per inch and 22wefts per inch.
