This would make an excellent addition for any collector of insurance company memorabilia, or a insurance agent/broker, or a company employee or retiree.
“The Monarch of the Glen”
A Stag/Elkhas long beenassociated with the name Hartford. An elk fording a stream wason the 16th century seal of the town of Hertford in England, from where the city of Hartford, Connecticuttook its name and stag seal. Hartford Insurance Company of Connecticut, founded in 1810, also uses the Stag/Elk as their symbol to this date.
The Hartford stag resembles one popularized in an 1851 painting by Sir Edwin Landseer called “The Monarch of the Glen.” Intended for display in the Peers\' Refreshment Room of House of Commons of the United Kingdom, \"Monarch of the Glen\" caused a stir when MPs refused to pay Landseer’s price, claiming it was too steep and that they had not been properly consulted. Eventually, the painting was sold to a private collector. Nevertheless, once seen, few could forget the powerful image of such a magnificent animal. Reproductions soon appeared throughout the English-speaking world.
