Gorgeous Mary F Holmes Purple Pitfire Pottery:
$135.00
This is a gorgeous one of a kind marbled pitfire raku pot handmade by artist Mary F Holmes in 1988. This piece features beautiful colors in shades of purple, black, white and teal. It is approximately 5” wide and 3 1/2” tall. The artists signature and ‘88 is etched on the bottom.
The artist included an information card with this piece which describes her process of creating the piece. The card reads as follows:
Each piece is wheel thrown, then it is polished to a high gloss. This is the process used by the Southwestern Pueblo Indians in creating their famous black pottery.
Each piece is then fired in a pit to “Red Heat” (1300 degrees) along with various combustible materials. When cool, the pieces are then hand polished with wax to a beautiful satin smooth appearance. No glaze is used in this process, therefore the shiny surface may be damaged by water. A soft cloth and a light buffing will retain the satin appearance.
This is a gorgeous piece to display in your home and would make a great gift for a loved one.
