Gold Nugget Specimen Silver Ore Quartz an Historic Artifact George Holmes :
This is the actual Discovery Rock from George Holmes when he discovered the Silver Queen mine (Now called golden queen mine) in the Mojave desert in the 1930's. (1933, Soledad Mountain)California. That started one of the largest gold rushes in US history. This is the exact discovery rock that George Holmes kept and held onto even after selling the mine to the Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa, for $3,170,000 plus royalties. (That is 45 million in todays money)As far as I know this is the only section of the (original find was 300 lbs.) Discovery rock that still exists; All other parts of the discovery rockwere crushed and melted down.
My sister and Iinherited this when my dad died, George Holmesisour great-great grandpa (by marriage). George passed this discovery rock down to my dad's mom; she passed it down to my dad;we got it when my dad died. There was also abook publishedwith a picture of it, but when my dad died, was unable to get in his belongings. All I have is a partial picture of the title.
The exact amount of gold and silver is unknown in this piece.Originally the discovery was about a 300 lb. Rock. Another section of it weight approx. 49 lbs, and had 4.5 ounces of gold and 377 ounces of silver in it. (I have the article on that, was published by Desert Sands) So this one (taken from the same 300 lb. section) weighing approx. 31 lbs. Could be approx. 2.84 oz. gold, and 238 oz. silver. That is assuming there is not a huge nugget in this rock. Just based off calculations of quantity vs. weight of the other section that was sent to the assayers.
This discovery rock was found in the early 1930's which makes it near 85 years old since it was discovered. And is the last known piece of the original discovery owned by George Holmes himself. And passed down the line! What an incredible piece of history. Museum Quality!
Also I am now including a scrap book (Over 50 pages) with this discovery rock since they go hand in hand together. Has lots of newspaper articles,Mr. Holmes signature on a pass for Jo P Carroll to go to the mine whenever he wants.Several pictures, includinga pictureof the first 135k check to George Holmes. George Holmes Santa Anita Park Card with signature (1954) (Horse racing), A Bank of America card in 1935 with Holmes and the bank managers signature stating him as a valued friend of their institution, Amessagefrom John Gaarden in 1935, and other goodies. Very very rare. I am unable to upload all of the pictures since it only lets you upload a small amount.
