Early 19th Century English Mahogany Fusee Verge Wall Clock, Hicks, Whitechappel
Very nice fusee verge escapement early 19th Century wall clock with silvered dial engraved \"Hicks\" and \"Whitechappel.\" Dial is 12\", bezel 16\". Both Roman and Arabic numerals as customary with the period. Intricate thatched engraving with \"Hicks.\" Flat bottom saltbox case, mahogany dial surround. Movement recently overhauled, polished, re-strung cable. Keeps very good time.
Saltbox case with flat bottom has viewing door on right side and bottom door for access to pendulum. Lock replaced, comes with key which may or may not work. Winding key included. An old repair to back of wood dial surround (on right with viewing door) visible in photos from rear—small piece of wood to secure crack, has no effect on dial. I left as is.
Britten’s reference book on English clockmakers lists James Hicks, 112 Whitechapel, 1804-15 and Charles Hicks, Whitechapel, same address, 1810-15. I have a photo of a tall case clock by James Hicks, White Chapel. Clocks may need adjustment after shipping. PayPal only, shipping with insurance to continental United States only.
