ITEM: antique, Eagle Square made in Shaftsbury, Vermont. According to the Shaftsbury Historical Society, after the War of 1812, Silas Hawkes, a local blacksmith obtained a U.S. patent for making steel carpenters’ squares in 1817 and went into business with Stephen A. Whipple in 1823. Whipple built “The Old Stone Mill” on the corner of RT. 7 and 67A, and installed a trip hammer that was run by the waterwheel. This \"factory\" eventually came to be known as Eagle Square Company. Please visit the Shaftsbury Historical Society site to read of the further history of this company. This is one of those early squares. The eagle appears to be an early version of the Eagle Square logo. You can see an olive branch in the eagles talons, and an American flag on a shield on his chest. This one has a nice taper from each corner to the ends. I found it in Shaftsbury at an estate sale about one mile from the Old Mill.
CONDITION: clear logo, minor rust spots not the square, could be removed with steel wool. I used steel wool on the logo, just so, I could actually see what kind of square it was.
MEASUREMENTS: the long leg is 24\", the shorter one is 15\"
SHIPPING: priority mail
Thanks for looking and happy ing!
