Steven Robert Guttenberg(born August 24, 1958)[1]is an American actor, author, businessman, producer, and director. He starred in 1984\'sPolice Academy, and went on to perform in lead roles inHollywoodfilms of the 1980s, includingCocoon,Three Men and a Baby,Three Men and a Little LadyandShort Circuit.
Guttenberg was born inBrooklyn, New York,[2]the son of Ann Iris (néeNewman), a surgical assistant, and Jerome Stanley Guttenberg, an electrical engineer.[1]He had aJewishupbringing[3]in theFlushingneighborhood of the borough ofQueens[2]before his family moved toNorth Massapequa, New York, where he graduated fromPlainedge High Schoolin 1976.[4][5][6]During high school, he attended a summer program at theJuilliard Schoolwhere he studied underJohn Houseman, and he won a role in an off-Broadway production ofThe Lion in Winter.[4][6]After his high school graduation, he attended the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany for a year. He moved toCaliforniato pursue an acting career.[4][6]As Guttenberg recounts,[where?]within weeks he was cast in aKentucky Fried Chickencommercial playing oppositeColonel Sanders.
CareerGuttenberg\'s film career has spanned four decades. He has been an actor, director, writer and producer. His production company, Mr. Kirby Productions, is named after Gerald J. Kirby, his high school drama teacher.[4]
Early filmsAfter playing an uncredited bit part inRollercoaster,[7]Guttenberg had his first screen credit in the TV-movieSomething for Joey(1977). He then played the starring role in the 1977 California high school comedyThe Chicken Chronicles, set inBeverly Hillsin 1969. He also appeared in the 1978 filmThe Boys From Brazil, based on theIra Levinbest seller, and guest starred on the showFamily. Guttenberg starred in the short-lived TV seriesBilly(1979), based onBilly Liar. He had a supporting role in the tennis romance filmPlayers(1979). In 1980, aCoca-Colacommercial featured him trying to help a non-English-speaking woman whose car stalled.[citation needed]
Guttenberg starred in the TV-movieTo Race the Wind(1980) playing blind lawyer Harold Krents. The same year he starred in theNancy Walker-directedCan\'t Stop the Music, a semiautobiographical movie about the disco groupVillage People.
Guttenberg playedJim Craigin another true life-inspired TV-movie,Miracle on Ice(1981). He appeared inBarry Levinson\'sDiner(1982) then starred in another short-lived TV seriesNo Soap, Radio(1982). He starred in the action comedyThe Man Who Wasn\'t There(1983) and had a supporting part in the television movieThe Day After(1983). Guttenberg starred inThe Ferret(1984) a pilot for a TV series that was not picked up.[citation needed]
Police Academy,CocoonandShort CircuitGuttenberg starred in an enormous hit when he played the lead role inPolice Academy(1984). It was quickly followed byPolice Academy 2: Their First Assignment(1985). Guttenberg then had the romantic male lead inCocoon(1985), another box office success. A comedy he starred in,Bad Medicine(1985), was not particularly successful. Guttenberg playedPecos Billin an episode ofTall Tales & Legendsthen was inPolice Academy 3: Back in Training(1986). Guttenberg starred inShort Circuit(1986) oppositeAlly Sheedy, another very popular film. He changed pace with the thrillerThe Bedroom Window(1987), directed byCurtis Hanson, then madePolice Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol(1987), his lastPolice AcademyFilm.
Guttenberg had a cameo inAmazon Women on the Moon(1987) and supportedMichael CaineandSally FieldinSurrender(1987).
Three Men and a BabyGuttenberg had the biggest financial success of his career to date withThree Men and a Baby(1987) withTom SelleckandTed Danson. He supportedPeter O\'TooleandDaryl HannahinHigh Spirits(1988), which flopped.Cocoon: The Return(1989) was a commercial disappointment as wasDon\'t Tell Her It\'s Me(1990).3 Men and a Little Lady(1990) however was a hit. In 1989 he appeared in theMichael Jacksonmusic video \"Liberian Girl\".[8]
1990sIn 1990 he replacedTimothy Huttonin the lead role ofPrelude to a Kissat theHelen Hayes TheatreonBroadway.[9]He also performed in London\'sWest End, where he starred inThe Boys Next Door. He appeared in the world stage premiere production ofFurthest From the Sun, whichWoody Harrelsondirected and co-authored.
He directed \"Love Off Limits\" forCBS Schoolbreak Specialin 1993 and starred inThe Big Green(1995) in England. He was among the ensemble inHome for the Holidays(1995) and starred inIt Takes Two(1995) withKirstie AlleyandMary-KateandAshley Olsen.
