This 1855 invitation to a December 18, 1855 Donation Party for the Rev. Z. H. Brown of North Ferrisburgh, Vermont measures approximately 4” x 6” and is in very good plus condition. Donation parties were once very popular as it was a way to provide funds (often rent) to someone who was in need. It is not clear what Rev. Brown needed donations for, but the Minutes of the Methodist Episcopal Church for its Baltimore Conference in 1856 lists Brown as one of the attendees. Perhaps this donation party, then, was an attempt to raise expenses for him for the trip. An interesting piece of historical or religious ephemera.
