Here is a gorgeous and historic Waterbury tall clock in quartersawn oak…a Waterbury Clock Co. standing “Regulator No. 61” , ca 1910 in excellent and working condition.
This is a jeweler's regulator with a pinwheel movement.
This tall case clock has been in the same place since one of the earlier renovations….in a downtown Charleston historic location, The Mills House on Queen and Meeting.
It has a perfect 12" porcelain dial, original pierced hands to include a second hand and original winding key is included. The hand painted dial with the Roman numerals is near perfect condition. This was one of the earliest clocks to have a second hand. The movement looks like it is brand new and is housed in a hinged black iron box. The heavy and ornate multi rod lyre pendulum is also original as is the brass weight. There is a cool brass mouse which can also hang by its tail. It came with the clock.
The case is beautiful in the quartersawn oak. The glass door has original glass and will lock and latch with two latches on the side. It is decorated with some applies carvings which are all still intact and there are two great turned finials at the top. Inside at the base are the two labels with one being the brass Waterbury badge and the paper label below which identifies the regulator as No. 61.
The Waterbury Regulator No. 61 was produced during Waterbury's business peak from 1903 to 1917 because of demand that stemmed greatly from the advancements made in the railroad. With the railroad came schedules, and people needed to know what the time was to a greater accuracy than simply night or day. As such, precision regulators were found chiefly in train stations, banks, and hotels, yet demand grew for smaller timepieces, such as precision watches, in large cities. In addition, people began to move to those cities where time became important in one's work place instead of generalized on one's farm. As the world became more modernized and in effect, smaller, time became a necessity not only to keep trains from colliding and economy running, but also for the common man who simply wanted the time of day.
In 1903, The Waterbury Regulator No. 61 was among those clocks with a second hand and probably considered nearly extraneous in its accuracy. At that time, no one needed to know the time to within a second, except perhaps in the railroad's case and those persons servicing the precision watches. Presently, the Waterbury Regulator No. 61 remains a superbly accurate clock even by today's standards of a precision movement.
The case is 96 1/4" tall. The finials could be removed if necessary.
These old original and complete Waterbury standing regulator No 61 tall clocks are getting harder to find. It would make a fabulous statement in a hotel lobby or a large bank as a show of excellence. It is a masterpiece and some kind of special!
