Offered together are two original matching World War I-era mounted studio photographs of identified U.S. Army Private Arnold Dietert. Both versos are handwritten “Arnold Dietert,” giving this pair unusually strong period provenance.

The best documentary match is Arnold G. Dietert (1890–1959), a Texas native and longtime Guadalupe County resident who registered for military service in 1918 and was buried at Zorn Cemetery. His military memorial records Private, U.S. Army, World War I.

One portrait shows Dietert standing at full length in his campaign hat, standing-collar service coat, breeches, wrap puttees, and lace-up boots. The companion portrait shows him seated beside a smiling young child. The child is unidentified, and no specific family relationship is claimed.

Two inverted V-shaped service chevrons are visible on the lower left sleeve. They appear consistent with the gold overseas-service form worn by WWI U.S. Army personnel, with one chevron representing each six-month period—suggesting at least one year of overseas service. Because these are monochrome photographs, the original braid color cannot be independently confirmed. No regiment, company, serial number, or theater of service has been verified.

Both photographs are presented on matching decorative card mounts bearing the imprint “Halm’s Art Studio, Seguin, Tex.” Halm’s was an established early Texas photographic studio whose Seguin work is represented in institutional collections.

SIZE:

Each mount measures approximately 5 1/2 inches wide. The two measure about 11 1/4 inches across when placed side by side. Please consult the ruler photograph for scale.

CONDITION:

Good antique condition overall. Both portraits remain clear and displayable. Expected age-related toning and fading are present, along with scattered spots, light surface marks and abrasions, areas of reflective silvering or haze, and general edge and corner wear to the card mounts. The backs show age toning and the handwritten identification. Please enlarge and inspect every photograph, as they form an important part of the condition description.
