WWI Rockingham County in the World War 1917-1918 Virginia history book :
$35.00

Rockingham County in the World War, 1917–1918is a local World War I history originally published in 1931 by the American Legion in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It documents the military service and home-front contributions of the citizens of Rockingham County, Virginia, during World War I.

Synopsis

Rather than focusing on the battles of the war themselves, the book chronicles how one Virginia community participated in the American war effort. It records the service of approximately1,226 men and women from Rockingham Countywho served in military or related wartime capacities.

The volume includes:

  • Rosters of county residents who served during World War I
  • Military units in which local men served
  • Biographical sketches of those killed in action
  • Accounts of decorations and awards received by county servicemen
  • Descriptions of local wartime activities and support efforts
  • Information on Liberty Loan drives, Red Cross work, and other home-front contributions

A significant portion of the book serves as a memorial to the county's war dead, preserving personal histories and service records that might otherwise have been lost. The work also highlights the sacrifices made by families and communities on the home front.

Historical Significance

Like many county war histories published shortly after World War I, the book was intended both as a historical record and a tribute to local veterans. Today it is especially valuable for genealogists and military historians because it contains rosters, biographical details, and local information often unavailable in official military histories.
