WHITE HOUSE MESSAGE ON NATURAL BEAUTY LYNDON JOHNSON 1965 ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT:
$750.00

THE WHITE HOUSE MESSAGE ON NATURAL BEAUTY BY PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON, FEBRUARY 8, 1965. [Washington, DC]: The White House, February 8, 1965. First edition, original mimeographed press release. Together with a typed letter signed by Adele [Nicki] N. Wilson, the assistant to the Secretary of the Interior, and associated, period newspaper clippings. This important document lays out LBJ’s plans for what would become The Highway Beautification Act (1965), the Clean Water Act and establishment of the EPA in 1970, and the Clean Air Act in 1972. Original 13-page mimeographed document (circa 8.5 x 14 inches), stapled. Page 6 is misprinted, with loss to text [as issued– please see image]. Together with a typed letter signed by the assistant to the Secretary of the Interior, on official letterhead, dated February 8th, 1965– the date the statement was released, and the address was given by LBJ. Original recipient’s name excised. Signed by “Nicki” Adele N. Wilson, Staff Assistant to Secretary of the Interior, with her ink annotation soliciting “review and comment” on the document. The original 13-page mimeographed Press Release is in very good condition, creased at old fold, newspaper offset tanning to 2 leaves, 2 spots of worming to last 3 leaves. The letter and associated, contemporary newspaper clippings are also in very good condition. Please see images to help best assess condition. This document is exceedingly rare– unrecorded by WorldCat/OCLC, currently absent from the trade, and no examples appearing at sale. I can’t even find a digitized version, although an example held by LBJ’s Presidential Library. This Presidential Message led to the The White House Conference on Natural Beauty, in May, 1965, and documents the beginnings of the modern environmental movement that we know today. LBJ’s successor, President Richard Nixon established the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, to consolidate federal pollution-control responsibilities under one independent agency. Certainly a founding document of the modern American environmental movement.
