Overview:
Up for sale is a fantastic, historically connected pair of vintage Rhode Island postcards mailed to the exact same family household on the East Side of Providence. Together, they offer a wonderful snapshot of coastal New England travel and correspondence from the mid-1930s to the late 1940s. Both cards are addressed to the Leavitt family at 12 Sarah St., Providence, R.I.
Card 1: S.S. Chauncey M. Depew Steamship (with Rare 1948 Travel Schedule)
• Front: A crisp, black-and-white view of the historic vessel, proudly branded as "The Fastest Excursion Steamer in N. E. Waters" operating the Providence – Newport – Block Island route.
• Back: Features a highly collectible, complete Daily June 25 – Sept. 8, 1948 Schedule and Rates table printed cleanly on the left side. It lists the departure and arrival times for the Dyer St. (Providence), West Pelham St. (Newport), and New Harbor (Block Island) terminals, along with original ticket pricing (e.g., $2.25 for a round trip).
• Postal/Message History: Features a green 1-Cent George Washington stamp with an authentic hand-cancellation. Includes a handwritten message from a passenger named Iva Reynolds detailing her trip down on the boat.
Card 2: "Bleak House" Mansion, Ocean Drive, Newport, RI
• Front: A beautiful color linen view of "Bleak House", the grand historic Winans-Perry estate. Because this iconic Peabody & Stearns-designed mansion was destroyed by a hurricane and ultimately demolished in 1948, this card stands as a vital visual record of a lost Newport estate. Curt Teich production code 4A-H1492.
• Back: Distributed locally by H. B. Settle, Newport, R.I. Features a clear Newport, RI postmark dated September 3 (6 PM) over a 1-Cent green George Washington stamp.
• Postal/Message History: Contains a charming, legible cursive note from "Aunt B" updating the family on her arrival and travel plans.
Condition Notes:
Both postcards are in excellent vintage used condition. They show minor edge and corner wear consistent with their age and authentic postal transit. Card 2 has a minor, standard postal ink transfer on the front face from transit handling. All printed schedules, handwritten text, postmarks, and stamps remain perfectly legible, bright, and intact.
