Complete four-volume vintage hardcover set of R. E. Lee: A Biography by Douglas Southall Freeman, published by Charles Scribner's Sons. Volumes I and II carry 1934 copyright dates and Volumes III and IV 1935 dates.
Freeman's extensive four-volume biography of Confederate General Robert E. Lee became a major work of Civil War biography and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography.
All four volumes feature the original red cloth bindings with gilt lettering and decorative details. This is a matched complete set with all four books in approximately the same overall condition.
Preowned vintage condition with expected wear from approximately 90 years of age and storage. The red cloth covers show rubbing, scuffs and edge wear, with fading to the spines and gilt lettering. Pages have age-related toning/tanning with some foxing and spotting, particularly to the endpapers. Pages and bindings remain intact, and no pen or pencil markings were found during inspection. No dust jackets included.
