Earth rocks and soil profoundly affected by very large meteorites (asteroids) are known as impactites. Offered here for your kind consideration is such an impactite, a thin slice of Sudbury impact melt breccia from the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) in Ontario, Canada.
The Sudbury structure formed about 1.85 billion years ago when a massive asteroid impacted Earth at high speed, with a force, much greater than a tsunami, earthquake, or supervolcano, equivalent to dozens of hydrogen bombs detonating simultaneously. It created one of the largest and best preserved impact structures on Earth, originally about 250 km (155 miles) in diameter. The second to last photo shows a digital LiDAR topographical map of the remains.
The impact melted huge volumes of crust, forming the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC). As that superheated melt sheet cooled and differentiated, metals concentrated into ores that have made Sudbury world famous for nickel, copper and platinum group elements, as well as silver and gold.
THE IMPACTITE: This fairly thin slice shows a very fine grained, dark impact melt matrix with scattered pale felsic lithic clasts. These are typical of the breccias associated with the base of the Sudbury melt sheet and footwall.
The slice is cut thin and flat, with natural matte faces as shown. The light colored clasts stand out in nice contrast against the near black matrix. The blue tape contains my accession number. You may easily remove it, if you wish.
SIZE AND WEIGHT: 18.5 x 7.5 x 0.3 cm (7 1/4 x 3 x 1/6 inch). It weighs 203 grams (seven oz.)
PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Richard Dreiser, collected in Sudbury and cut by a colleague.
Photos show the exact specimen you will receive. I will include the 5-cm (2-inch) wide identification card shown, stating this specimen is from the collection of Richard Dreiser.
