LEMUEL PENN School Official & WWII African American Hero Murder 1964 Newspaper Offered is an original, collectible newspaper (NOT a copy/reproduction): THE DETROIT NEWS, July 12, 1964* Murder of Lieutenant Colonel Lemuel Penn
* Georgia Ku Klux Klan - KKK membersThe top of the front page has a six column headline: "FBI PROBES SLAYING OF NEGRO EDUCATOR" with subheads and photo of Penn. (see images)Complete with 80+ pages, small library stamp within the masthead, tiny binding holes along the spine, nice condition. Background: The July 11, 1964, murder of Lieutenant Colonel Lemuel Penn stands as a watershed moment in American legal history, notable both for its tragic timing—occurring just nine days after the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964—and for its unprecedented legal aftermath. Returning home to Washington, D.C., from Army Reserve training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Penn—a decorated Black World War II veteran and assistant superintendent of D.C. public schools—was stalked and ambushed near Colbert, Georgia, by Ku Klux Klan members who fired shotguns into his moving vehicle simply for carrying Black officers with out-of-state license plates. What makes Penn’s case remarkably rare for the Jim Crow era was the historic federal intervention that followed an all-white state jury’s predictable acquittal of the perpetrators: federal prosecutors invoked an obscure Reconstruction-era law to charge the Klansmen with civil rights violations, leading to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision United States v. Guest (1966). This ruling established a vital constitutional precedent by affirming that the federal government could prosecute private individuals—not just state actors—for conspiring to deprive citizens of their civil rights, ultimately yielding rare federal prison sentences for Klan violence in the South and fundamentally reshaping federal civil rights enforcement. Please Note: All of our offerings are 100% authentic! We do not offer reprints or reproductions of any kind. They are guaranteed to be original!
Links to Archival Storage Options & Certificates of Authenticity Are Below!Historical reports may be beautifulor ugly, but they are always informative. While we rejoice in the beautiful (heroic, discovery, amazing feats, etc.), we at History's Newsstand also offer "the ugly" for we are determined to learn from the wrongs of the past - understanding, to do so, we must be willing to look these wrongs directly in the face and shout "NO MORE!". It is for this reason many Black Americans collect historic slave ads, Jews collect reports regarding the Holocaust, women collect coverage of the Women's Suffrage Movement, etc.. If you find any to be offensive, we agree! Hopefully this is an indication we are moving in the right direction.
