Photo Overview

This real photo postcard shows famed British music hall male impersonator Hetty King in formal evening dress, wearing a dark tailcoat, white bow tie, flower in her lapel and a tall top hat, facing the camera with a confident expression. Boldly signed in fountain pen across the image, the inscription reads “Best Wishes Hetty King,” making this a desirable hand signed RPPC of the celebrated UK stage star in one of her classic trouser-role costumes, likely taken in London in the 1910s.

Hetty King (born Winifred Emms, 1883-1972) was one of Britain’s best known music hall and variety performers, famous for her charismatic male impersonations and patriotic songs during World War 1, entertaining troops and audiences across the UK and abroad. Original signed images of King in character are sought after by collectors of British theater, LGBTQ+ history, and music hall memorabilia, and attractive early examples like this seldom surface on the market, so securing it now will give your collection a standout piece with proven cross-category appeal.

Text Present

Front inscription, across image:
"Best Wishes
Hetty King"

Back, center in pencil:
"Hetty
King"

Print analysis: RPPC on photographic postcard stock with real photo surface and period ink signature; blank postcard-style reverse without printed divider or stamp box suggests an early 20th century British real photo postcard produced close to the time of the sitting. Given the subject’s peak WW1-era fame and the style of dress and card, this is most likely a Type 1 original RPPC printed from the negative c1910s and then hand-signed by Hetty King.

Condition: Photo is in good to excellent condition. Autograph is hand signed.
