Willard latter published many of these same images aslinen postcards, printed byCurt Teich. He photographed the deserts andmountains of the West for 58 years. He also pioneered the art of tintingphotographs with oil paint.
Willard was born inEarlville, Illinois, but movedtoCorona, Californiawhen he was two years old.He got hisfirst camera when he turned 14, and won his first photography competition whenhe was 18.
In 1918, Willard joined the Army as a photographer. Heserved as a photographer in the8th Infantry Divisionin France,taking photographs that were turned into postcards for the troops. He returnedto the United States and left the Army in 1919, moving toPalm Springs. Hemet and married Beatrice Armstrong, in 1921.In 1925 their daughterBeatriceWillardwas born, she would become a noted Americanbotanicalresearcherspecializing in high alpine and arctictundra.
He opened a photography studio and gallery inPalmSpringsin 1922.He opened a gallery in Mammoth Lakes in 1924.Hebuilt a home and studio in Palm Springs in 1935.He spent more than 20years taking photographs of theColoradoandMojave Desertsinthe winter and theEastern Sierrain the summer.
In 1936,Minerva Hamilton Hoytenlisted Willard totake photographs of parts of the Mojave Desert.Hoyt then used thesephotographs as part of a successful argument toFranklin Delano RoosevelttocreateJoshua Tree National Monument.Willard\'s photographs of theCalifornia deserts were also important in enlargingDeath Valley NationalPark.
In 1947, Willard found Palm Springs to be too crowded, thussold his Palm Springs home to Patricia and Chester Moorten who would developthe property into theMoorten Botanical Gardens. Willard then spent histime at the gallery in Mammoth.He died in 1966 in theOwens Valley.
Willards daughter Beatrice donated a large setof Willard\'s artwork and equipment to thePalm Springs Art Museumin1999.
