Up for sale is a beautiful 0.6” (~1.5 cm) Pyritized Crucilobiceras densinodulum fossil ammonite preserved in a 1.7” (~4.3 cm) matrix, from the famous Jurassic Coast at Charmouth, Dorset, England, dating to the Early Jurassic (Sinemurian), approximately 195–196 million years ago. Crucilobiceras is an extinct genus of marine ammonites recognized for its distinctive coiled shell and prominent ribbing. This specimen is attributed to the beautifully pyritized ammonites for which the Charmouth coast is celebrated, where iron sulfide mineralization can give fossils an attractive metallic appearance. Ammonites were ancient relatives of modern cephalopods, including squid, octopuses, and nautiluses, and used their chambered shells to regulate buoyancy while inhabiting prehistoric seas. Crucilobiceras is particularly interesting to collectors because its distinctive shell ornamentation provides valuable evidence for understanding ammonite diversity and evolution during the Early Jurassic. With the ammonite measuring 0.6 inches and its surrounding matrix measuring 1.7 inches, this specimen makes an appealing compact display piece that retains its geological context. The exact fossil ammonite and matrix shown in the listing photographs are the specimen you will receive—an excellent addition for collectors of British ammonites, pyritized fossils, Jurassic Coast specimens, and ancient marine life.
