The 20th Illinois Volunteers served from 1861-1865, in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and the Carolinas. Sgt Silas Scott was appointed 1st Sergeant Company A in 1864, serving in the March to the Sea, from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia and the Carolinas incl the Battle of Bentonville, NC with the 17th Army Corp Army of the Tennessee under General John Logan, and was mustered out July, 1865. An Original Civil War Union Army Commission with a handsome Federal Eagle logo, to Silas D Scott as Sergeant Company A, 20th Illinois. The Commission was issued at Raleigh, North Carolina April 28, 1865, 2 days after Johnston's Army of Tennessee had surrendered. The Commission is signed by Captain Henry King, listed as "Commanding" the Regiment, and by Sergeant Major Frank Chester as Regimental Adjutant. Comes w service info. Captain King and Sergeant Chester enlisted in 1861 and served the entire War. King, from Joilet, rose from the ranks to Commander of the 20th in 1865. In his memoir "I Marched with Sherman", Ira Blanchard' of the 20th Illinois," says of King, "the boys were quite proud of him". 1p 10 x 15" on heavy tan paper stock, signed in ink.Minor age stains, edge wear, Overall VG.
