General Thomas J Wood was unfairly blamed by General Rosecrans for the Federal Defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, September, 1863. Two months later General Wood and his men redeemed themselves , being the first to reach the Rebels on Missionary Ridge. Rosecrans was removed from command. An Original Civil War Siege of Chattanooga, Tennessee General Order issued at HQ 3rd Division, 4th Army Corp Chattanooga, Tennessee, October 24th, 1863 charging Corporal Joseph F Groff, 1st Ohio Volunteers with Cowardice on the Battle-Field., and found guilty, was .sentenced to military prison. He soon returned to his unit and was Killed in Action at the Battle of Acworth, Georgia.He is buried at Marietta National Cemetery. . The 2pp Printed General Order also charges 2 other 1st Ohio soldiers with misbehavior, and 2 other Ohio and Kentucky Volunteers with desertion. The Order has a striking Chattanooga, Tennessee logo,issued by Command of General Thomas J Wood. The Order is ink signed on the reverse by Captain Marcus Bestow as AAG, 2pp 8 x 5" ptd/ink. Age stains, lower edge torn and soiled,Acid Free archival repair on reverse lower edge.Overall VG. Comes with Service info. Captain Bestow of the 26th Ohio rose to brevet colonel by the War's End.
