Published by the Associated Students of Brigham Young University, this substantial vintage yearbook preserves an extraordinary snapshot of BYU immediately following World War II—including students, faculty, athletics, organizations, campus activities and university life.
Of particular interest are several individuals who became important figures in BYU and Latter-day Saint history.
NOTABLE INDIVIDUALS
Hugh Nibley — Listed in the yearbook\'s faculty index. Nibley joined BYU in 1946 and became one of the university\'s best-known religion professors, scholars and authors.
Roland Minson — Member of BYU\'s 1948–49 basketball team. Minson became one of the great players in BYU basketball history. He later helped lead BYU to the 1951 NIT championship, was named the tournament\'s Most Valuable Player, became a three-time first-team all-conference selection and was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. BYU later retired his No. 11 jersey.
Joseph “Joe” Nelson — Another standout member of the 1948–49 BYU basketball team. Nelson led BYU in scoring for three consecutive seasons, earned three All-Conference selections, received All-America recognition and later played professional basketball. He was inducted into the BYU Hall of Fame.
The 1948–49 BYU basketball roster also included DeRay Fullmer, Jack Whipple, Russell Hillman, Kent Durrant, Bob Craig, Randy Clark, Clarence Osterhues, Dick Jones, Joe Weight, Ralph Greenhalgh, Ivan Beem, Stan Nielson and Ted Thiel.
