Biography:
Charles Gifford Dyer (1846–1912) was born in Chicago and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy before briefly serving in the Civil War. After resigning due to health, he devoted himself to art, studying in Paris under Jacquesson de la Chevreuse and entering the Royal Academy of Munich in 1871. He spent much of his professional career in Munich, Paris, and Venice, also traveling through Rome, Egypt, and Syria.
His paintings, often Venetian scenes or historic studies, include St. Mark’s, Venice with Armenian Chapel, On Linden When the Sun Was Low, and Venice at Birth of Day. His works remain collected and occasionally surface in major sales.

“Munich, Bavaria. Apr. 29th, 1878… In answer to your request I enclose whatever is at hand bearing upon my artistic career… I know of no respectable work on ‘Contemporaneous Art’ without I shall in company with many others take great interest in your work… In case your work is to be illustrated I would gladly send photographs of some of my works…”
