It is 32 pages long, and measures 8 x 11 inches in size. The paper came from a bound volume and has some typical minor disbinding marks at the spine, but is otherwise in excellent and very attractive condition. It will be shipped in a clear report binder, to help keep it safe from deterioration in the future.The lead article of the issue is on CINCINNATI. It features a fine woodcut engraving of the city’s bridge spanning the Ohio River, showing some vessels on the water, and several gentlemen and ladies promending in the foreground. Inside is a full-page panoramic illustration of “The City of Cincinnati,” as seen from one of the surrounding hills.The text accompanying the engravings take up more than all of the second page, and run for over 300 lines of text. It begins by giving a history of the city, and then discusses what it is like in the present-day of 1873. It leads into this by saying:“. . . if the site on which Cincinnati is built is most advantageous from a business point of view, it is also picturesque and beautiful in the highest degree. In fact, none of our larger western cities can at all compare with Cincinnati in this respect. The tourist visiting it, no matter what point he may look upon the city, will constantly find new charms to admire the views opening before him, whether he stands on the Kentucky shore, with the gigantic Suspension Bridge, or on one of the beautiful, vine-clad hills that encircle the city.”The article then describes some of the main streets in the city, its industries, churches, noteworthy buildings, and its citizenry. Noting its many German residents, the reporter wryly comments, “the number of lager-beer saloons is truly enormous. There is some sort of excuse for it, because Cincinnati lager-beer is the best in the United States.” It concludes by saying: “We cannot admit that no city in the United States has more delightful environs than issue also has interesting articles on “Marine Disasters.”; “Some Anecdotes of Edwin Forrest,” by a person who was the literary agent of the famous, recently-deceased, Shakespearean actor; an editorial on a John Stuart Mill debate; and “AN EVENING WITH LISZT,” which is two full pages of text about a visit in Rome with the great composer, including many direct quotes from Liszt. on this publication: Appleton’s Journal was an illustrated weekly paper published in New York. Its parent company was D. Appleton & Co., Publishers, which at the time was one of America’s leading book publishers. The paper was founded in 1869, and achieved a widespread, but shortlived national popularity during the next six years. It carried some serial fiction, but most of its content was devoted to essays on Americana subjects, plus the arts and sciences. Following several changes in editors, however, it began suffering a decline in circulation.
