A compelling mid-19th century albumen portrait photograph on its original mount, identified on the reverse as Nancy Groves Brown Foster of Mount Vernon, Ohio. The overall piece measures approximately 7.25 x 10 inches, with the photograph itself about 5.5 x 8 inches, a desirable larger format typical of studio portraiture from the 1860s era.

The sitter is shown seated in formal dress with a white collar and bonnet, posed beside a decorative studio chair. The style of dress, mount, and composition strongly support an 1860s–early 1870s dating.

The reverse is extensively inscribed with genealogical notes, making this far more than a simple portrait. The writing identifies Nancy as having multiple surnames—Groves (maiden), Brown, and Foster—indicating at least two marriages. It records that she lived in Mount Vernon, Ohio, later spent time in Winchester while raising children, and resided for over 30 years in Washington, D.C., ultimately living to be over 90 years old and dying at the home of her youngest daughter (identified as Emma or Gertrude Foster, handwriting unclear).

Children named in the inscription include:

  • Ann Eliza Brown
  • Jessie Brown
  • Jonathan Foster
  • Emma Foster

Additional family references include Thomas Foster, descendants of Emma, and a connected branch through Robert Walter H. Best. The photograph later descended to Clarence Brown of Denver, Colorado (Bryan Place 1465), providing a clear multi-generation lineage trail.

Condition:
Overall good antique condition with expected age wear. The mount shows edge and corner wear, light staining, and handling marks. The photograph itself retains strong clarity and contrast. Reverse shows age toning and handwritten ink as described.

A highly desirable fully identified Civil War-era portrait with unusually rich genealogical detail spanning multiple surnames and locations—ideal for collectors of early photography, Ohio history, or family research material.

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
