1770 Connecticut Manuscript Farm Lease Plainfield Windham Co. Shepard Wheeler:
$150.00

This original colonial-era legal document records a one-year lease agreement between Josiah Shepard and Abraham Shepard of Plainfield for the consideration of twelve pounds, five shillings.

The lease conveys use of a farm and dwelling together with livestock and farming equipment, including:

  • One yoke of oxen
  • One breeding mare
  • One cow with calf
  • Ten merchantable sheep
  • Farm, house, and improvements

The agreement contains detailed provisions requiring good husbandry, restricting the cutting of timber and firewood, requiring payment of taxes, and specifying the condition in which the property must be returned at the end of the lease.

Signed by Josiah Shepard and Abraham Shepard, with witness signatures appearing to include Jobe Wheeler and Eunis (Eunice) Peirce (please examine photos and judge signatures for yourself).

An excellent piece of early Connecticut agricultural and legal history dating to the colonial period, before the American Revolution.

Condition: Original manuscript on laid paper with fold lines, age toning, and edge wear consistent with age. Please review all photographs carefully for condition and legibility.
