SCARCE PAIR OF ORIGINAL LEATHER GAUNTLET ISSUED BY THE US ARMY TO CAVALRY AND LIGHT ARTILLERY ENLISTED MAN SOLDIERS BEGINNING IN 1884 TO AROUND 1905. ORIGINALLY MADE OF CALF SKIN THEN GOAT SKIN PERHAPS THEN BUCKSKIN?. I CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE LEATHER. THEY ARE CLEARLY MARKED PHILA DEPOT INSIDE BUT DIFFICULT TO READ AND DATE. PERHAPS 1895?, THE INSPECTOR IS F. QUINLAN AND THE SIZE SEEMS TO BE 8 1/8. THE MAKER NAME APPEARS TO BE "THE DANIELS HAT COMPANY". A SOLDIER'S NAME IS HAND WRITTEN ON EACH GAUNTLET.
THIS PAIR OF GAUNTLETS SHOW MUCH FIELD USE WITH A COUPLE OF SPLITS AS SHOWN IN MY PICTURES. THEY DO NOT SHOW WHEN DISPLAYED. THE USUAL DIRT AND SOILING FROM FIELD USE BUT A FINE REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLE OF A DIFFICULT PAIR OF GAUNTLETS TO FIND.
