This is an antique autograph album with gilt page edges and has belonged to a family of wealth of this period.....that is full of hand drawn and hand painted pictures signed and dated by various artists. ...from 1902 to about 1916.There are about 48 sketches, drawings, art work and 29 odes and poems - writing.
It was presented as a birthday gift to Florence Dixon in 1902.
Very fine work some of it with great attention to detail.... there are some Military propaganda like drawings - cartoons as well as poems and odes as you find in this sort of book.
The first sketch shows a cannon in box with wires coming out of it and two sticks of dynamite like rods with the words PORT ARTHUR and a Bear with sword is holding the two sticks of dynamite. The front of the box says JAPANESE BATTERY and there is a soldier winding a handle on the side of the box...Signed HSD. It is a cartoon of the Siege of Port Arthur of the Russo Japanese War 1904.
Another has 3 pen ink drawings of a single horse pulling a cart with 7 people in it and a driver of the horse caption says DRIVING THE RUSSIANS BACK ...second picture is a bearded fur hat wearing soldier getting bitten by a bulldog .. caption says FIERCE ATTACK ON THE RUSSIAN REAR........ third picture shows a bearded gent walking to his bed wearing nightdress and slippers holding a candle go-to-bed and caption says KUROPATIN RETIRES...... this is all signed at the bottom of the page War Correspondent GW Lewis March 13th 1905.
Interesting if you google this chap Kuropatin ... he was a General and he was the Russian Imperial Minister of War.....But more interesting f you google G.W. Lewis War Correspondent ...seems this is Sir Willmott Harsant Lewis 1877 - 1950 who was a journalist and he worked for the New York Herald during this Russo Japanese war.. he later worked for The Times 1920 - 48. He and his wife Ethel Thurston Noyes Lewis also had a son by the same name as his father exactly Junior and in the sameprofessionand he died Sept 10th 2012.
Possibly another by William Lewis a sketch and wording signed G.L. 1905 and its relating to men as asses... half men and half ass.
Some are upside down on the pages as well.
LUX won\'t shrink wool dated 1912.
A politicallyincorrect painting of a young black boy and a 5 line poem signed by A. Myers March 21st 1912.
The colour sketch of the 2 cats is very good.
OXO is 3d a cup.
An ink sketch shows a stout man in a uniform with a large long tash and below it says \" I personally conduct tours to the land of the Japs \" ...signed SVB \'04.
Of course I am not going to be able to show all work in this... but my price is based on the William Lewis cartoon and signature really..there will distant relations of this family and they may well want to keep this album for future generations....I have seen a couple of b/w photographs of him on line. Did he do cartoons or illustrations for the newspapers of the period or is this just a doodle in a book ?
Original pencil drawings that are signed by the artist can be worth a small fortune especially if they have never seen before !!!
