Large card mounted photograph (mount 10” by 12”) of asteamroller on a wide street, probably in Norwich, Connecticut, circa 1880s to1890s. No photographer or publisher identified. The untitled view shows two menwith a steamroller parked at the edge of a broad avenue in a suburbanneighborhood. The street leads up to a forked intersection. This appears to beBroad Street where Washington Street forks to the left, the area between themforming Chelsea Parade. The Soldier’s Monument is just visible through thetrees, with a cast iron planter or fountain at the edge of the street at thefork. The steamroller looks like it could be an Aveling & Portersteamroller, and it has some steam coming out of its smoke stack. It looks likethey’ve finished their work, judging by the wonderfully smooth road surface. The photograph is in only good condition, mostly because of damage to themount. There’s some staining around the edges (more so on the back) and a tearat the top edge (just about ½” into the photograph). The photograph, however, isin good or better condition. It exhibits good or better tonal range and showsgood or better detail. Great early steamroller and Norwich CT image!
