This middle to late 1800's olive wood box with intricate micromosaic inlays in the Tunbridge manner is most likely from Sorrento and measures 1 3/4" tall x 10 1/2" long x 3 1/8" deep. Its slightly domed lid features intricate petit point rose border framing a mixed wood inlaid scene of goats and garlands (May Pole?) with a bird in flight center. The sides and back continue the petit point bands in geometric repeats and foliate motifs with birds' eye maple bands. It is in nice, stable condition with lovely, old French polish surface showing some expected warping, age cracks and very minor losses at the corners.
