Abraham Lincoln 1864 Civil War presidential campaign button:
$100.00
Description: Original button made sometime in 1863/1864 (after an 1862 portrait image). It is known that these were worn during the 1864 campaign, and many were reused after Lincoln’s assassination on mourning ribbons, etc. I have collected these buttons for years; they are getting very difficult to find.
This is one of two known variations with metal prongs which were folded over golden age-era buttons. These variations include: a small head version and this larger head version. There is also a large head version mounted on a tin back with shank.
Details/notes: Stamped brass alloy; metal prongs folded over circa 1840s button, which is correct for the type.
You will receive the exact button(s) shown. The photos are not manipulated other than cropping for upload/size constraints.
For sizing, refer to the photos. A standard US dime (18mm) is used to show a comparative size.
*I am a retired professional museum conservator, writer, editor, and photographer. Though now visually disabled, I still professionally clean and conserve historic uniform buttons as a hobby using only museum-prescribed mechanical cleaning techniques. This means no chemicals of any kind are used to clean the artifacts I sell - ever.
In addition to conserving these items, I still study and produce research articles on specialized typologies.
All of the excavated buttons I sell are absolutely authentic and were recovered from private property with permission. I do not invent the history or provenance of any excavated button I sell.
