About Pawlet, Vermont ![]()
Rutland County
*Area, Population and Density rankings refer to Pawlet's relative position among Vermont's 255 civic entities (9 cities, 242 towns, 4 gores and grants). Complete rankings are here.
Pawlet was the first of three towns to be granted to the men from Nine Partners (now Amenia), New York. Like the other two, Danby and Harwich (now Mount Tabor), the name of the town derived from the British peerage.
The Paulet family (sometimes Powlett, Pawlet, or Poulet) had been prominent since the time of Henry VIII, when William Paulet was created first Marquis of Winchester. Later members of the family were also dukes of Bolton. Charles Paulet (1685-1754), the third Duke, is usually suggested as the source for the name of Pawlet (and also Bolton), because Benning Wentworth had already named Winchester, New Hampshire for him. However, when Pawlet was granted, another Charles Paulet (1718-65) was the fifth Duke of Bolton; while he was far less notable than the third Duke, Wentworth may have been thinking of him.

This is a basic geographic reference, intended to show relative location of adjacent towns. Directional accuracy is limited to 16 compass points. There isn't even the slightest suggestion that one can necessarily travel directly from one town to the next (as in "You can't get there from here").
