One of several towns in the Northeast Kingdom (a term generally credited to the late George Aiken, former Vermont Governor and US Senator, describing the still very rural area comprised of Essex, Orleans and Caledonia counties in a 1949 speech. The name stuck.) chartered to Timothy Andrews and his associates, unquestionably named for a Connecticut fmily of the same name. After Andrews, the next four names on the grant were Nortons: Jedediah Sr., Jedediah Jr., Achsah and Elizabeth, who were probably father, son, mother and daughter-in-law. As Connecticut residents they were probably involved in the Vermont lands as a business venture only, and did not intend to settle in the new town, for indeed none of them ever did.

Utilities
[Top]

Notes about utilities:

  • One electric or phone company indicates that company serves the entire town. More than one of either indicates each serves different areas of town.
  • A listed cable company MIGHT mean the entire town is covered, but not necessarily. More than one listed indicates each serves different areas of town.
  • Unless your area is one served by Vermont's only gas utility, your only option is bottled gas (any dealer).
